In the past six months, this website has been viewed thousands of times by former members of the 170th MP Company. Nearly all of them have been Fort Lewis era members (1984-2009), as you can tell by the photo submissions that we have received. But now we are starting to reach out to Presidio era members (1971-1984) and we would like to welcome those members here as well. We know that this website is pretty sparse for Presidio era info, and we currently have no photos from the Presidio days, but we are committed to improving that. If you served with the 170th MPC at the Presidio, you are invited to help us to create a fitting tribute to your era of service on this website.

When I arrived at Presidio, 30th MP Battalion, in March of 1970, we were called Company “A” and this was changed to the 170th. During my brief time in the 170th from March 1970 to June 1971, our commanding officers were Lt. Col. Crisp, Col. Harageones, Major Berry, and our CO was Cpt. Brian Harper with 1st Sgt. James T. Richmand. Patoon leader 1st Lt. Richardson and patoon sgt. Robinson. I’m not smart enough to remember all of these names so that credit goes to one who served with me at this time and recently began emailing, Earl Sharninghouse. I look forward to a reunion in the future with those who also served during this time as well as recent members.

I was stationed at 170th MP Co from 1982-1984. I remember sitting on the stairwell of the barracks and all of a sudden the building started to shake. I had just survived my first earthquake. I had so many friends that I have lost touch with. I remember walking the hallways of LAMC and visiting the rest areas on the upper floors (ZZZZZZZZ) during midnight shifts. We used to try and catch people parking on the lookouts late at night. Shut the lights and engine off and cost in to nab ‘em in the act. I think the post SGM got caught once if I do recall. LOL! The good old days!

Was stationed at Presidio 170th from 11/81 through 7/83. Loved, loved LOVED it!!! Some of my fondest memories. It would be great to cross paths with some of my old gang. There was one midnight shift that I had to call the station (via radio) and ask them to look at the sky and see what they saw…crazy chasing lights in the sky (like tag)….next day it was supposedly reported “weather balloons.” Also, my first winter there I got to experience the rainiest season they had in quite a while…that lead to mudslides in the back of some of the homes. Crazy stuff.

I was stationed at the Presidio from 1982 to 1986. I was scheduled to ETS in 1983 but I reenlisted for 3 more years. I ended up being stationed here the whole time. I will never forget the experience. I remember my fellow MP brothers and sisters, Jack Hollingshead and Maxine Ballard, that have posted comments. I’d do it all over again…

I was stationed at the Presidio from December 1976 to May 1978. I was with 1st Plt. 170th MP Co. This was best time (did not know it at the time) I would have in the Army. From there I went to Germany (Tower Rat) for a year and a half. We pulled white hat for a month then support for a month trading with the 402nd MP Co. Also did white hat duty at LAMC (Letterman) four ten Mids – good duty. I can remember driving around in an open jeep in the fog (sedans were down) on patrol trying to stay warm. On foot patrol down at the LAMC where houses with the rain, fog and cold (by the bay) again trying to stay warm. Going to Baker Beach for a BBQ (1st Sgt loved BBQ Pig). Looking out over the parade field you would see the top of the bridge over the fog. Sorry to ramble but very good memories.

Garry,
I remember you—I was stationed at the Presidio from December 1977 through April 1979. What a great site this is on to run into you.
I’ve got a few pictures of the Presidio and the “troops” I’ll have to dig out and post on here of the old barracks, motor pool and all the FUN we had there.

Well, I was stationed at Presidio 1980-1981, and then shipped off to Johnston Atoll. While at Presidio, I was stationed or did time at Camp Parks and Fort Ord (My PLC training). Anybody from that era? Please drop me a line…
